Community engagement for proposed SA-NSW interconnector engagement goes virtual

Members of the public wanting to find out more about the proposed new electricity interconnector between South Australia and New South Wales, called Project EnergyConnect, can now visit an online engagement room.

ElectraNet Land Services Manager, Scott Haynes, said the new online tool expanded on the project’s comprehensive community engagement initiatives and activities.

“We want to make sure that we are giving interested members of the community as much information about the project as possible while also ensuring they have the opportunity to provide feedback as we continue to work through the approval and planning stages,” Mr Haynes said.

“The online room enables visitors to explore various displays to learn more about the project’s South Australian component, including the preferred route alignment for the first time.

“Landowners, Commonwealth and State government, local councils, community members, and interest groups have been instrumental in providing insights in selecting the route and assessing potential impacts.  

“Extensive specialist studies and consultation, and an assessment of potential environmental and social impacts have all been considered in arriving at the preferred route.

“This detail will be available in the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) which will be released in April 2021 but visitors to the online room will have the opportunity to read about the preliminary findings and the preferred route before the EIS is released.

“With the ongoing uncertainty due to COVID-19, the room also gives visitors the opportunity to provide feedback on the findings of the studies and the route using an online tool from the comfort of their own home.”

As well as the online room, engagement with stakeholders will continue as the environmental assessment and approval process progresses, and ElectraNet would like to thank everyone for all of their feedback to date.
